IPL – Photorejuvenation & Vascular Treatments
As we age, our skin undergoes changes due to factors like reduced collagen production and exposure to UV light. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment effectively targets sun-damaged skin, providing a range of benefits:
Smoother skin texture
Reduction or elimination of age spots
Evening out of pigmentation
Diminished diffuse redness
Improved overall skin appearance
Facial treatments are popular, but IPL can also be applied to various body areas. Additionally, IPL technology effectively treats vascular lesions such as Port Wine Stains, facial blood vessels, and early Rosacea-related redness. It’s also part of our multimodal acne management plan.

Treatment Areas and Results
IPL treatments are suitable for the face, neck, chest, and body. While noticeable results may appear after one session, optimal outcomes typically require 1-4 sessions.
How IPL Works for Skin Rejuvenation
At Skin Glow Dermatology, we utilize the latest Selective Waveband Technology (SWT) IPL system. This advanced technology delivers safe bursts of intense pulsed light, targeting melanin in age spots and hemoglobin in blood vessels. The affected cells heat up and are destroyed rapidly, leading to rejuvenated skin with minimal discomfort.
Conditions Treated with IPL
In addition to sun damage, IPL effectively addresses various skin concerns such as acne, rosacea, pigmentation issues, scarring, and excessive sweating.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How long does an IPL treatment take?
A full-face treatment takes less than 20 minutes. You should see an improvement after the first treatment, but up to 3 treatments may be required to achieve the full effect.
Does the IPL treatment hurt?
While tolerance of pain is very individual, no anaesthetics are needed, although a cooling air stream can be used if required.
What can I expect after IPL treatment?
You may notice that the skin looks a little “dirty” for a few days following treatment. After that you will find that your skin looks smoother and fresher. You might choose to have 1-2 annual maintenance treatments in order to keep your youthful appearance.
Are there any contradictions?
Contraindications to IPL for photo rejuvenation and vascular treatments: Recent sunburn or unprotected sun exposure Pregnancy Epilepsy or seizures triggered by flashing lights Infection, dermatitis, eczema or cold sores within the treatment area Certain medications.
How does Selective Waveband Technology (SWT) differ from traditional IPL?
Traditional IPL devices emit a broad spectrum of light, some of which is unnecessary and can cause excess heat in the skin. SWT uses patented filters to narrow the light spectrum to only the “active” wavelengths that treat your specific condition. This means we can achieve better results for redness and brown spots using lower energy, making the treatment safer and more comfortable for our patients
What does the skin look like immediately after an IPL session?
Directly after treatment, you may experience mild redness similar to a very light sunburn. If we are treating sun spots, you will notice a “peppering” effect—the spots will turn darker and look like coffee grounds on the skin’s surface. Do not pick at these; they will naturally flake off within 5 to 7 days, revealing clearer skin underneath
Can IPL effectively treat Rosacea and facial redness?
Yes, IPL is one of the most effective non-invasive treatments for Rosacea. The light energy targets the superficial blood vessels responsible for chronic redness and “flushing.” By collapsing these tiny capillaries, we can significantly reduce diffuse redness and improve the overall skin tone for patients struggling with vascular sensitivity
Is the IPL procedure painful for facial treatments?
Most patients describe the sensation of the SWT pulses as a light “flick” or the snap of a small rubber band against the skin. Because our technology is so precise, many patients find it much more tolerable than older laser systems. We also utilize a cooling air stream during the procedure to ensure the skin remains comfortable.
How many IPL sessions are needed for sun damage?
While a single session can provide a noticeable “glow” and some pigment clearance, most clinical protocols for sun damage or vascular lesions require 3 to 4 sessions spaced approximately 4 weeks apart. This allows the body time to safely absorb the treated cells and produce new, healthy collagen.
Who should avoid IPL or Vascular treatments?
IPL is not suitable for everyone. Major contraindications include recent sun exposure or tanning, pregnancy, and a history of seizures triggered by light. Additionally, patients with very dark skin tones (Fitzpatrick Scale V or VI) may not be candidates for traditional IPL due to the risk of hyperpigmentation; however, we offer alternative treatments like SkinPen Microneedling for those cases.
How should I prepare for my IPL appointment in Brooklyn?
The most important rule is Sun Avoidance. You must avoid direct sun exposure and tanning beds for at least 4 weeks prior to your treatment. We also ask that you stop using topical retinoids or exfoliating acids (AHA/BHA) 3 to 5 days before your visit to prevent skin sensitivity
